New mixtape: DJ Cull presents Trans-Europe Express

If you were listening to Barricade Radio last night you would've heard this played out. Cloud and Owl asked me to do a one hour guest mix for their Insurgent Souls radio show, and this is what I came up with.

I'd heard a couple of tunes recently where the rhythm reminded me of the movement of a train, so I came up with the idea of a themed mix for a train ride round Europe. There's 11 tracks, from 9 different countries, that take you on a journey through cities and countryside. The full tracklist is below, together with the places that the tracks represent. To listen to the mix just click on the picture above, or for a cheeky free download right click and 'save as'.

1. East India Youth - Hinterland; London, England
2. René Roussel - Caramel (Plancher de L'Usine Remix by DJ Cull); Paris, France
3. Seams - Rilo; Berlin, Germany
4. Soulwax - Another Excuse (DFA Remix); Ghent, Belgium
5. Clapan - The Back of Silence; Krasnodar, Russia
6. Kraftwerk - Metropolis; Düsseldorf, Germany
7. Trentemøller - Deceive (feat. Sune Rose Wagner); Copenhagen, Denmark
8. Vår - Boy; Copenhagen, Denmark
9. Gidge - For Seoul (Applescal Remix); Umea, Sweden
10. Sau Poler - Rutes; Barcelona, Spain
11. Koreless - Never; Glasgow, Scotland

New playlist - A Track A Day 2014

I've been trying to stick a song into this Spotify playlist every day since the year began, and while there've been a few days where I had to catch up, we've got to the end of January and there are 31 songs in it, so something must've worked.

The track selection might seem a bit random, but that's kinda the point, and anyway, that's what my musical taste is like. So you get birthdays (Syd Barrett), deaths (Pete Seeger), new stuff (Young Fathers), old stuff (Flying Burrito Brothers), gigs I've been to or am going to (Withered Hand, Summer Camp) and whatever else takes my fancy. I'll post the list at the end of every month, so here's the sound of January.

Choice Cuts #1 2013

DJ Cull's Choice Cuts #1 by Dj Cull on Mixcloud

For the new year I thought I'd mix up my new music mixtapes a bit, so this year you can expect to get a wider range of music genres. And while they'll still be mostly new music, there'll be the odd track here and there that I might have just discovered (or rediscovered). Basically they'll be a pretty good reflection of what I'm listening to the most right now. So this week alongside the new stuff there's a classic track from Neu!, a band I heard for the first time only a few months ago, but whose influences I can spot in a lot of the music I like, not least the Beak> track that precedes them on this mixtape.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the new format, let me know if you've got any feedback or want any more information on any of the tracks. Press on the play button above to listen, here's the listing:

1. Kyle Bent - Intro

The Gayngs Side of Town - new mixtape

The Gayngs Side of Town by Dj Cull on Mixcloud

Regular readers will know that the Gayngs album 'Relayted' was one of my favourites of 2010. And seeing them live at SXSW in 2011 was definitely one of my highlights of that trip. If you're not familiar with Gayngs, the album came about through a mutual love of 10cc's track 'I'm Not In Love' and quickly turned into a bit of a supergroup project, creating an album that paid homage to that kind of music while also sounding completely contemporary.

In the absence of any new music from Gayngs I've put together this 15 track mixtape featuring a couple of songs from the record, some stuff from artists who took part or have since hooked up with the band, and some other music that just seemed to fit with the overall vibe. Hope you enjoy it - let me know what you think...

1. The Art of Noise - Moments In Love
2. Gayngs - The Gaudy Side of Town
3. Har Mar Superstar - O
4. Prince - I Can't Make U Love Me
5.

6. Bon Iver - Hinnom, TX
7. Air - Cherry Blossom Girl
8. Aloe Blacc - Life So Hard
9. Bob Marley & The Wailers - Sun Is Shining
10. The Beatles - Something
11. Bob Dylan - Lay Lady Lay
12. Beck - Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime
13. Portishead - Glory Box
14. Poliça - I See My Mother
15. Gayngs - The Last Prom on Earth
