Recommended music: '25 25' by Factory Floor

25 25 cover art

For their second album Factory Floor have stripped back their sound somewhat, having also stripped down their band size from three members to two.

An album born from long, late nights spent in dark and moody clubs, this is a record that engages brain and feet as one, without necessarily any need for emotional attachment. This is no bad thing - the purpose of this music is to deliver pounding electronic bleeps and beats and it does that in abundance.

Lose yourself in the repetition and it becomes almost meditative - with no real vocals to distract you, just some snatches and cut up words, the music allows you to escape to another headspace.

For me there are four standout tracks on here. The first is 'Slow Listen', with its almost tribal rhythm and the closest to actual singing on the record. The later on there's the triple whammy of 'Dial Me In', 'Wave' and 'Ya'. 'Dial Me In' has a late 80s Chicago house vibe to it, as well as reminding me of 'Fine Time' by New Order. 'Wave' is straight up next, a pounding (factory) floor filler. Thetrio of techno tunes finishes with 'Ya', which may be a distant cousin of LCD Soundsystem's 'Yeah' and which has a hypnotic acidic bassline that you just can't shift out of your head.

Overall this is a marked improvement from their patchy debut and one which definitely deserves your attention.

Video of the Day: 'OB-8' by Shit Robot

With a new album due out in the Spring, long-time DFA artist Shit Robot has unleashed this hypnotic, driving track which is matched with a suitably driving video. I love tracks like this that gradually build layer upon layer of instruments, this is exactly how I like to put things together when I'm making remixes.

It all bodes well for a classic new Shit Robot album this year.

Remix of the Day: 'Here I Am (Wolfram Remix Edit)' by The Juan Maclean

Grab yourself a free download of this satisfying dark and moody piece of electronica. Sounding a bit like the soundtrack for some sci-fi blockbuster when it starts it soon heads for the dancefloor while still remaining rather menacing.

It's all up to the usual high DFA standards so have a listen and download below.

Surprising cover version of the day - Ezra Furman does LCD Soundsystem

This blog is (at times anyway) a paean to LCD Soundsystem and all their associated wonders, so it's not really a surprise that I like this. Furman has stripped the track back to just an acoustic guitar and vocals, in doing so highlighting was a great songwriter Mr. Murphy is (not that you need me to tell you that). The track can be found on a bonus disc that comes with Ezra's new album 'Perpetual Motion People' when you buy it from any of the Rough Trade shops.

Remix of the Day: 'Soft As Rain (MCFERRDOG Remix)' by Dan Bodan

Another one of those situations where I've never heard the original version, but the remix is so good I don't really need to. I love the '80s-sounding sampled vocals behind Dan's amazing voice, the ticking rhythms and then the deep bass that comes in after three minutes or so. A few minutes later the percussion drops away and it comes a more emotional beast, before a final shuffle on the dancefloor at the end. Even better, you can get it for free courtesy of DFA Records so have a listen and download it below.

Recommended music: 'Mean Love' by Sinkane

On his fourth full length album (the first for DFA Records) Ahmed Gallab shows that he's finally ready for the big time. With his confidence having been boosted by a starring roles in Luaka Bop's 'Atomic Bomb: Who is William Onyeabor?' live project, he's created a classy and stylish album that's full of brilliant touches. Effortlessly switching genres, from Afrobeat to funk to soul and back again, his voice is smoother than a silk negligee sliding down Kate Moss's freshly shaven legs.

With tracks harking back to the 70s and the 60s, this is still a thoroughly contemporary record that could only exist in the melting pot of today's cultures. Take 'Galley Boys' for example. It's got African rhythms, a reggae bassline, tons of pedal steel and a chorus melody similar too Primal Scream's 'Star'' Topped off with Ahmed's brilliant voice it all sounds so easy, but you know that sounding so laid-back is a hard thing to achieve.

It's the kind of record that you can play at any time of day or night, whatever mood you're in, and emerge feeling like a better person. Basically if you're at all fed up it'll put a smile on your face, and you could as easily dance to it as make love to it (or maybe even do one followed by the other?).

I reckon this album cements him as a major talent who'll not only continue to make his own great records but can have his pick of whichever artists he wants to work with in the future.

Currently on a whistle-stop tour to promote the album, Sinkane are back in the UK later in the year for some more dates, including one at Oslo in Hackney on December 1st which promises to banish the winter blues. I'll see you there!

Cover version of the Day: 'Tusk' by The Crystal Ark

Anyone who's ever got me talking on the subject of Fleetwood Mac will know that at best there's probably only 2 songs of theirs that I'll tolerate (for me, if the words 'Fleetwood Mac' aren't preceded by 'Peter Green's' then I don't really want to know). Fortunately 'Tusk' is one of the ones that I like, and on this new version Gavin Russom's The Crystal Ark succeed in making it sound like a completely contemporary song. It could absolutely be a new track by someone on DFA Records or similar - it's dark, weirdly danceable and engrossing stuff.

The track is from a new Fleetwood Mac covers album which also features the likes of The Kills, St Vincent, Lykke Li and many more, and is released on or around August 14th, depending where you live.

Things that remind me of other things #1: 'Busy Earnin'' by Jungle & 'You Can't Hide' by LCD Soundsystem

I've been listening to Busy Earnin' for a while now and in the back of my mind there was a nagging feeling that it felt like something else. It finally clicked today while I was playing the song (really loudly) in the sunshine. They're not identical but I reckon the vibe's pretty similar. If you're not familiar with the LCD Soundsystem track it was on the '45:33' album that they made for Nike. This version's taken from their fantastic farewell concert at Madison Square Gardens:

The Jungle track comes from their eponomyously-titled debut album, which came out this week:

Compare and contrast - what do you think?

Track of the Day: 'Hold Tight' by Sinkane

The first track from the next Sinkane album 'Mean Love' is a slow and seductive number that hints at a more mature sound. The rhythmic, circular groove is topped of with sultry vocals and some great falsetto. It's a brilliant vibe and definitely puts the new record on the 'to buy' list - it'll be out on DFA Records in North America and City Slang everywhere else.

Remix of the Day: 'Bridge & Tunnel (a/just/ed Remix) by Holy Ghost!

The always excellent Holy Ghost! from New York have provided this great remix for you to download for free. Full of bleeps, bloops and general electronic loveliness it's certain to get your feet moving and your head nodding (mine's doing that as I type this, that's how I know). Grab it below.

Remix of the Day: 'We Are Explorers (Larry Gus Remix)' by Cut Copy

A brilliantly wonky remix of this track from Cut Copy's latest album 'Free Your Mind' by DFA Records' Larry Gus. Starting with some ramshackle drums, this version then meanders through some chiming, melodic keyboards, before stepping up the antics by adding cowbells and backwards vocals. As the rhythm builds there are jazz trumpets and a shouting man thrown into the mix. It's all a bit mad, which is why I love it.

Listen or download the track for free below.

Track of the Day: 'Teenagers In Heat' by Holy Ghost!

It's a hot, hazy summer day in the city. What you need is the perfect soundtrack, something that brings together New Order-esque vocals with Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder 'Electric Dreams' instrumentation. To fill that need Holy Ghost! have kindly presented us with 'Teenagers In Heat', their new release on DFA Records. And then, like finding an ice-cream van at the end of the road dispensing complimentary 99s, they've given it away for free.

Listen and download below.

New music: 'Second Summer (RAC and Ben Aqua remixes) by Yacht

Here's your chance to grab a couple of free remixes of the latest single by Yacht, courtesy of the ever-lovely DFA Records. The two mixes are quite different, personally I prefer the RAC one but they're both worth a listen and they suit the sunny weather vibe.

Track of the Day: 'After You (Soulwax Mix)' by Pulp

Released exclusively on vinyl for Record Store Day (this Saturday) this is every bit as massive as you would hope for. It's pretty much a music lover's wet dream - the long lost Pulp song which emerged unexpectedly over Christmas, having had its knobs twizzled and buttons polished by none other than James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem, gets a make-over from Belgiums Dewaele brothers, thus ensuring that it fits nicely into their DJ sets. This has gone straight to the top of my shopping list for Rough Trade on Saturday.

Recommended music: 'Mars' by Sinkane

This album crept out on DFA Records / City Slang towards the end of 2012, and since then has slowly been building up both critical acclaim and a swelling groundbase of support. It's a real melting pot of a record, as varied as the background of Sinkane founder Ahmed Gallab. He was born in the Sudan, but currently resides in Brooklyn, NYC. His journey from one to the other has taken him from being a hardcore punk in Columbus, Ohio to touring the world as part of such illustrious acts as Yeasayer, Caribou, Born Ruffians and Of Montreal. The records is mostly his own work but there are various guest spots from his friends famous and otherwise, and live the band is expanded to an energetic four-piece.

The only way to pigeon-hole this record is to put it into the slot marked 'good-time party music'. Whatever genre he's playing with, be it '70s jazz (there are hints of Herbie Hancock), African high-life, funk or soul the common thread is that this is upbeat, positive music. There's some great guitar work, loads of varied and technically accomplished drumming and overall this is an album that rarely flags. A high point for me is 'Making Time', which fuses all of the albums elements together and tops them off with a fantastic guitar solo from Twin Shadow's George Lewis Jr. Here's the video for the opening track 'Runnin':

At the bottom of the page you can listen to the whole album, courtesy of the lovely people at DFA. If you like it (I'm sure you will) make sure you buy it and/or go and see the band live - they're playing all over Europe in April (including a London gig tomorrow night which I'm going to), and the US in May and June.

New music: 'Rain' by The Crystal Ark

The latest single from LCD Soundsystem affiliate Gavin Russom is now available to download for free, gratis, and with no obligations, form the ever-obliging DFA Records. It's a chunky, funky slice of electro-dance-pop that has been scientifically proven to make you dance more the louder you play it. Grab it and devour it!

Rain is taken from The Crystal Ark's eponymously-titled début album which came out towards the end of 2012.

Record Store Day 2012

So I'm back from the annual Record Store Day pilgrimage to Rough Trade East - obviously I go there at other times during the year, but this special day in April is always a 'must-do'. Having arrived at 6.30 there seemed to be less people in the queue than last year, although they soon built up behind us. The shop was more organised than ever before, with the albums & 12"s arranged alphabetically in racks, and a special counter for the 7"s. Having filled up the baskets that Spencer handed to us Pete & I made our way to the back of the store to tally up our purchases, faint at the cost, and then sift out some of the less essential pieces. You can see the evidence of my haul at the top, here's a list of what I got (left to right, back to front):

  1. Ty Seagall & White Fence - Hair - white vinyl 12 (ltd. to 180)
  2. DJ Food - Amorphous Androgynous remixes - orange marble 12" (ltd. to 1,000)
  3. Tinariwen - Tassili remixes - orange vinyl 12" (ltd. to 500)
  4. Lanterns on the Lake - Low Tide - white vinyl 12" (ltd. to 500)
  5. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds -  white vinyl 12" (ltd. to 1,000)
  6. Richard Hawley - Leave Your Body Behind - 10" (ltd. to 750)
  7. Big Deal vs S.C.U.M - split 7" - (ltd. to 250)
  8. The Wedding Present - 4 Chansons EP - clear vinyl 10"
  9. The Civil Wars - Billie Jean / Sour Times 7"
  10. Gorillaz - Do Ya Thing - one-sided 10" picture disc (ltd. to 500)
  11. Elbow - McGregor - one-sided 7"
  12. Dirty Beaches / Xiu Xiu - split 7" (ltd. to 300)
  13. Field Music - Actually, Nearly -
  14. The White Stripes - Handsprings / Red Death at 6.14 - black / red swirl vinyl 7"
  15. Arctic Monkeys - R U Mine? / Electricity - purple vinyl 7" (ltd. to 1,750)
  16. The Black Angels - Watch Out Boy / I'd Rather Be Lonely - orange vinyl 7"
  17. David Lynch - Noah's Ark (Moby Remix) - 12" (ltd. to 500)
  18. Moby - David Lynch & Photek Remixes - white vinyl 12" (ltd. to 300)
  19. Hot Chip - Night and Day (Daphni Mix) - one sided 12" (ltd to 1,000)
  20. LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge
I do have one complaint, which is that very few (i.e. only 2) of the things I bought this year came with download codes. I know that one of the points about the day is to get people to buy vinyl, but when you've spent 8 or 8 quid on a single, or £20-upwards on an album, it'd be nice to be able to listen to it somewhere other than in the same room as your turntable. Record companies take note and do more of this next year please!

Track of the Day: 'It's Not Over (Dimitri From Paris EuroMix) by Holy Ghost!

Got this in the post on 12" the other day, and when I played it I couldn't believe how much it reminded me of the classic Shep Pettibone 12" mix of New Order's 'True Faith'. So for your entertainment, you can listen to a piece of the Holy Ghost! track above, and then below you get to hear Holy Ghost! followed by New Order - see if you can tell the difference!

Recommended music: 'Clay Class' by Prinzhorn Dance School

Although they're on the DFA Records label, there's an unmistakeably British sound to this second album from the UK duo of Tobin Prinz and Suzi Horn. Spiky, post-punk guitars and post-modern rhythms meet boy-girl vocals on a record that looks forward and back in equal measure.

The vocals throughout have a half-sung, half-spoken feel, as if they can't decide which to choose, and don't care either way. Throughout the album the sparse arrangements strangely feel quite oppressive, as if the space left between the bass and drums is full of ghosts waiting to haunt you.

'I Want You' is probably the most effective track on the album, striking a great balance between male & female vocals, guitar, bass and drums - it feels like a song you've known for years, and the lyrics have a perfectly weighted, sinister tone. 'Your Fire Has Gone Out' is Franz Ferdinand vs Elastica vs Wire vs Art Brut, while 'Crisis Team' feels cold but comforting. Maybe 'Flaura and Fauna of Britain in Bloom' tries a bit too hard and falls a bit short of its target, but 'Turn Up The Light' soon repairs the damage. The one string guitar solo on here reminds me a bit of New Order and also (I'm not sure why) the track makes me think of The White Stripes. 'Sing Orderly' talks of "cds and pills" in "Copenhagen in France", as if the objects and places are interchangeable, while other lyrics on here sum up the album - "the children are the future" but "the kids are punks".

Overall an enjoyable listen from start to finish. If you want to catch the band live they're playing 93 Feet East on 1st March.
