Recommended music: 'Sisters' EP by Roniia

Sisters EP cover art

After the initial release of the first track 'Love Me' the full new EP from Roniia has landed and it's a cracker from start to finish. After the pounding beat-girl feel of track 1 we're back into more familiar territory with track 2. 'Run' first appeared on last year's 'Mixtape Vol. 1' and to my mind it's one of the best things they've ever recorded. Nona's vocals have never sounded so good and they soar perfectly over the dark beats below them.

Title track 'Sisters' is a calmer affair, at least to start with as Nona takes the spotlight. Halfway through though the beats and synths kick in again, fighting to take centre stage. 'Beg' is a brooding 2 and a half minutes that wouldn't sound out of place on a Massive Attack record, and the EP closes with 'Hell', which is has a swooning, beautiful melody hidden behind a swathe of synths and distortion.

Stream and/or buy the record below.

Track of the Day: 'Lately' by Polica

Polica, Village Underground, London - 14/2/16

The third track to have appeared from Polica's third album 'United Crushers' is a more downbeat affair than the first two. Having seen them play most, if not all, of the new album live at Village Underground on Monday night I can say that there are some fairly banging tunes on there with some heavily distorted vocals. This is a more straightforward track but it does nicely show off Channy's vocals and their knack of writing a good tune.

The album is out on 4th March on Memphis Industries (UK) and Totaly Gross National Product (US).

Track of the Day: 'Lime Habit' by POLIÇA

POLIÇA are back, with a new album 'United Crushers' due in March next year. The first single from it is 'Lime Habit', a brilliantly fresh slice of  synths and electronic beats topped off with Channy's excellent vocals. I'm pleased to say that the vocal effects have been notched down even more on this record and that this is pretty much her natural sound, pure and unfiltered, and the track is all the better for it.

There'll be a tour to go with the album next year, including a date at Village Underground in London on February 13th where you'll be able to find me.

Track of the Day: 'Raw Exit' by POLIÇA

As Poliça develop as a band they get more and more interesting, at least to me. This probably has a lot to do with them playing and writing together, although I also think they're influenced by the time they've spent playing and touring with Marijuana Deathsquads, the band that's been described as Poliça's older, dirtier brother. This new track features on a new 'Deluxe' edition of their album 'Shulamith', and will also come out on a 4-track 10" vinyl EP with 3 more new tracks, including their cover of Lesley Gore's 'You Don't Know Me'. Featuring heavily treated vocals and a pretty funky bassline, the (possibly aggressive) lyrics want to know "Who's ready to die alone?"

Live review: 2 nights in the company of Marijuana Deathsquads and Poliça

Night 1 - 11th February - Our Black Heart, Camden

Walking into the Black Heart you can see that it's aptly named - it's one of the darkest pubs I've ever been in. But if you squint through the gloom you find a great selection of 'proper' beers, as well as what certainly smells like good food from the kitchen, which is currently run by Smoke'n'Roll. Perfect then for a few drinks before you head upstairs to the venue, which I think holds around 150 punters.

If you've not heard of Marijuana Deathsquads before, they've variously been described as a 'noise collective' and 'Poliça's older, uglier brother'. Both groups are put together and overseen by Ryan Olson (who also formed GAYNGS and various other acts in Minneapolis), with shared members on record and live, so it's no surprise to see a tweet early in the evening to see a tweet from Poliça to say that they are heading to Camden to join in with MDS. Both acts also have (at least) 2 drummers live, and as we walk in we notice that there are actually 3 drum kits set up on the Black Heart's stage. In fact they take up the entirety of the stage, meaning that the remainder of the MDS kit is set up in front of the stage and, in effect, in the audience.

What's better than 2 drummers? 3 drummers of course - the MDS stage set up
The allotted time arrives and 6 members of MDS appear - the three drummers (Ben Ivanescu, Drew Christopher and someone I haven't yet identified), head man Ryan Olson, Mark McGee and 'vocalist' Isaac Gale. After a couple of track they're joined Chris Bierden, and then later Channy Leaneagh emerges, a slight figure dressed in a hoody who seems as completely into the music as the rest of the band. When they're not joining in Channy and Chris stand next to us (which is nice).

After a while I notice that although Olson is constantly talking into his mic, his vocals aren't coming through the speakers. It becomes clear that he's talking to, and instructing, the drummers, all of whom wear headphones as they drum along to the electronic sounds. His role is almost that of a conductor - encouraging the others, telling them when to start and stop etc. I don't know how they concentrate with the constant dialogue, but while he's even laughing and joking with them at some points the drumming is a powerhouse of awesomeness throughout the show.

(l-r) Mark, woman in audience, Ryan, back of Isaac's head, unnamed drummer
During a few conversations these past few days we've been trying to work out exactly what genre you'd fit MDS into if you had to pigeonhole them.'Drums and shouting' was suggested by Tuesday night's companion, but that doesn't do their sound justice. There are layers upon layers of drums, music and vocals, producing a proverbial wall of sound that completely absorbs and envelops you. And an (unwanted) scientific experiment on Tuesday has confirmed that 3 drummers in unison can produce enough rhythm to vibrate an almost full pint glass completely off the shelf you've carefully put it on, splashing its contents (Neanderthal ale since you asked) down the back of your legs.

Having had the chance for a quick chat with Isaac and Ben after the gig it's apparent that as well as being an awesome band they're thoroughly nice blokes as well. I bid them goodnight and head home, the sounds of 'Ewok Sadness' and 'Wave' still reverberating through my brain. I wouldn't be surprised if in years to come this show is like the Sex Pistols at the Free Trade Hall - hundreds of people will claim to have been there.

Channy and yours truly after the show, 11/2/14
Night 2 - 12th February - The Troxy, Limehouse

It's blowing up a storm as we walk down the Commercial Road to art deco venue The Troxy, an ex-cinema then bingo hall which has been well restored with a great sound system, and which is metaphorically a million miles away from the Black Heart. I'd seen other acts here before (Jarvis Cocker, The Flaming Lips, Nick Cave, New Order) but had never been right down the front on the barrier, something that I was able to achieve for this show. Only 2 drummers for MDS this time, but the sound was great through the bigger system, and with smoke and lights they looked to be a band easily capable of filling a bigger stage (I reckoned the Troxy stage to be the size of the entire venue from the the previous night).

A pretty good visual representation of the MDS sound (l-r) Isaac, Mark, Ryan & Ben onstage at The Troxy 12/2/14
Channy still joined them for a couple of tracks at the end, and while it might not have been as intense and full-on as the previous show it still seemed to convert a fair few people standing near me. I snatched 90 second of 'Ewok Sadness' before my phone ran out of memory which you can see below.

On to headliners Poliça, who to me are a much more appealing prospect live than they are on record. Their first album in particular never really achieved what it could have (to my ears), although good progress has been made with the second. Live though, the presentation of the songs with 2 drummers, a bass guitarist and Channy on vocals gives them a new dimension. I think she's a captivating and powerful frontwoman with a real style and voice of her own, and it's pretty mesmerising to watch her.

Channy Leaneagh, Polica at The Troxy, London 12/2/14
Over the course of 90 minutes they played nearly all of the songs from the 2 records, as well as a cover version. Ryan Olson joined them to twiddle knobs a couple of times, and I spotted Isaac Gale taking photos and filming from both sides of the stage - one of his other jobs is as a video director for the likes of Bon Iver and Dark Dark Dark.

Accidentally arty photo of Channy and Ryan
Overall I've had 2 great nights out, and I get the impression they all did too. There's a sense of camaraderie between them, they're like an extended family or a gang (or maybe a Gayng?). I hope MDS come back to London soon, and in the meantime if they pass anywhere near your door make sure you go and see them.

Video of the Day: 'Ewok Sadness' by Marijuana Deathsquads

I know, I know, this blog is getting pretty full up with Marijuana Deathsquads posts. But they keep coming up with creative and entertaining stuff, and as long as they do then I'll keep posting them. This video is directed by MDS member Isaac Gale, and features Har Mar Superstar, American comedian Jacy Catlin and, of course, an Ewok.

If you want to see Marijuana Deathsquads in the UK they'll be supporting Polica in February. as well as playing their own headline show in Camden on 11th February - you can get tickets for that here. I'll see you there!

Video of the Day: 'Prisoner' featuring Juliette Lewis by Har Mar Superstar

Apparently (according to the internet anyway) today is Har Mar Superstar day in Minneapolis. To celebrate you can watch the video for his new single 'Prisoner'. A per pro of nothing in particular, it features your man Har Mar in a BMX duel with the delectable Ms. Lewis. I won't tell you who wins, but all I'll say is that I certainly wouldn't be riding off into the sunset and leaving her behind.

Har Mar Superstar's brilliant album 'Bye Bye 17' is out now and is available, as they say, from all good record stores.

New music: 'Oh My Sexy Lord' by Marijuana Deathsquads

OK, so the album isn't actually here yet (it's out on October 15th), but if this face-meltingly psychedelic advert for it is anything to go by then we're in for a treat. Play in full screen mode, just stare at it for a while and see what happens...

New music: 'Chain My Name' by POLIÇA

After 'Tiff' a few months ago, this is the second track to have appeared from Polica's second album 'Shulamith' which is out in October. It's more upbeat than a lot of the tracks on their début album, and thankfully Channy's vocals haven't been as heavily treated as before so you can hear her beautiful voice properly.

Based on this and 'Tiff' I reckon that the new album could well see them break out into the big time, which will be great for them. My only hope is that their continued success doesn't delay the next GAYNGS album too much more.

New music: 'Music Rocks Parts 1 & 2' by Marijuana Deathsquads

The latest release from the collective from Minneapolis consists of 2 EPs, recorded a month or two apart and then put together for what they describe as 'a two-part series of one musical experience'.

The band are saying that this is 'the best, most representative recording' of them to have been put out so far. it certainly reflects their penchant for drummers (on occasion they've had 6 drummers on stage at once) and is full of pounding, driving rhythms, distorted vocals and electronics. As well as founder members Ryan Olson (GAYNGS leader and Polica producer), Isaac Gale and Stefon Alexander (P.O.S) the tracks feature a whole host of other friends and local musicians, most notably including Channy Leaneagh, who sings in Polica. To get your free download of the album just click on the picture of the album sleeve above.

The band are in the middl of a busy and fertile period, having just played a month-long residency and also announced an entire remix album of P.O.S.'s 'We Don't Even Live Here', which will be given away later this month. They also found time to put together a near 27-minute long track called 'The River' which will be released later in the year - you can listen to that below.

One last thing - if you're wondering where the band's name came from, I asked Isaac Gale that very question - this was his response:

The name Marijuana Deathsquads just sort of appeared naturally, as great poetry often does. The words were put together and the inspiration struck that it would be a fantastic name. We try our best to pull off as many ridiculous feats as a band that we possibly can...

Track of the Day: 'Tiff' by Poliça

5 reasons why this track is better than anything off 'Give You The Ghost', last year's album by Poliça.
  1. It doesn't use that really annoying auto-tune / vocoder effect that, in my opinion, completely ruined the album.
  2. As a result of 1, you can here the loveliness of Channy Leaneagh's voice - even the potty-mouthed bits.
  3. It features the equally lovely Justin Vernon (from Bon Iver)
  4. It sounds like it belongs on 'Relayted', the 2010 album by Gayngs, which is one of my favourite albums from the last few years. This gives me hope that there might be another Gayngs album on the horizon.
  5. It's named after ex-racing driver, ex-Top Gear presenter and current Fifth Gear presenter Tiff Needell
The single is out digitally today from all good online stores. Listen to it below.

PS Number 5 might not be 100% true...

The Gayngs Side of Town - new mixtape

Regular readers will know that the Gayngs album 'Relayted' was one of my favourites of 2010. And seeing them live at SXSW in 2011 was definitely one of my highlights of that trip. If you're not familiar with Gayngs, the album came about through a mutual love of 10cc's track 'I'm Not In Love' and quickly turned into a bit of a supergroup project, creating an album that paid homage to that kind of music while also sounding completely contemporary.

In the absence of any new music from Gayngs I've put together this 15 track mixtape featuring a couple of songs from the record, some stuff from artists who took part or have since hooked up with the band, and some other music that just seemed to fit with the overall vibe. Hope you enjoy it - let me know what you think...

  1. The Art of Noise - Moments In Love
  2. Gayngs - The Gaudy Side of Town
  3. Har Mar Superstar - O
  4. Prince - I Can't Make U Love Me

  5. Bon Iver - Hinnom, TX
  6. Air - Cherry Blossom Girl
  7. Aloe Blacc - Life So Hard
  8. Bob Marley & The Wailers - Sun Is Shining
  9. The Beatles - Something
  10. Bob Dylan - Lay Lady Lay
  11. Beck - Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime
  12. Portishead - Glory Box
  13. Poliça - I See My Mother
  14. Gayngs - The Last Prom on Earth
